Global Day of Service Project 2023

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's 2023 Global Day of Service project’s objective was to Improve the breast and cervical health of women in the Borough New Kru Town area of Montserrado County. One of the poorest and most densely populated in the country. Breast Cancers rank as the leading cause of female cancer in Liberia and is the most common in women aged 15 to 44 years. For cervical cancer more than 70% of new cases end in death. Liberia has one mammogram machine and there is no radiotherapy available. Many Liberian women suffer and die largely due to limited access to essential prevention, screening and treatment services.

Awareness activities brought 707 women to screening days held in each community. The breast and cervical screenings resulted in 23 were referrals for further examination, imaging and labs. Of these 11 were for breast and 12 for cervical. Several of the women had visible masses and sores.

From the 23 women referred there were:

12 positives for cancer (9 breast & 3 cervical) of these 1 did not return after being diagnosed, 3 are deceased and 8 are in active treatment.

 5 women were non-cancerous but required some form of surgery or treatment.

 3 women were negative.

 3 women did not show up for their referral appointment.

At the Delta Iota Zeta chapter level, a project director is the liaison with our Z-Hope International Director. Soror Victoria Cooper has fiduciary responsibility, ensures MOU compliance and project outcomes. She also provides direction to all partners, meets with LCRI weekly and all partners monthly to monitor and provide guidance on the project implementation.

Most of the 8 women in active treatment will require support beyond June 2024 and we are committed

to providing them with holistic support throughout their journey to wellness. As current project funds

will be exhausted by June 2024, we have started a Go-Fund-Me to finance the ongoing treatment when this project ends.

Our objective is to raise another $400,000 which would be used over the next five years for their chemotherapy and other treatment.
